Twenty-Fourth Sunday After Pentecost PDF Print E-mail
My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

The question that is asked of the Savior in the beginning of this Gospel reading is a momentous question that each one of us needs to be constantly asking. "What shall I do to inherit eternal life?" This Gospel reading answers this question and teaches us not only what we must do but even gives us a most revealing example of how to do it.(continue)

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

The first thing that I want to do is remind those of you who live in our Bay Area that we have a pilgrimage scheduled this Saturday, Nov.15 to the Mare Island Cemetery where eight  Russian sailors who were stranded on Mare Island and died far away from their home and loved ones are buried. A group of these sailors were heroes who volunteered to help fight the terrible fires that engulfed parts of San Francisco after the great earthquake at the beginning of the 20th century. Our Church stresses how spiritually important it is to pray for those who have passed into the other world. This pilgrimage will be headed by Bishop Peter and assisted by our clergy. I urge all who are able to make this sacrifice to come for the service which will begin at 12:00 noon. Directions to the cemetery can be found on  Google maps if you enter the destination of Mare Island Cemetery, Vallejo 94592. (continue)

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

Before beginning our discussion, I wanted to remind everyone of the three very important events that are happening this week. Thursday (Nov 6) is the main feast day of our Cathedral, the holiday of the icon Our Lady the Joy of All Who Sorrow. All people in the Bay Area are invited to the services as well as the festive meal that is open to all after the liturgy on Thursday. Those of you who live far away, please remember us on that day in your prayers. On Friday (Nov 7), the miracle-working icon of the Righteous St. Anna will visit the cathedral in the evening  for an akathist. Those of you who cannot make it to venerate the icon may, if you wish, send a request with a list of names to be read at the service to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Friday is also the anniversary of a most tragic happening. It is the date of the bloody Russian Revolution. A panihida will be served after the liturgy Friday morning for all the victims of this debacle. And now let us look at the Gospel reading: (continue)

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
A common but deadly mistake people make is forgetting that everything that we have, including our life, is not really ours. Everything belongs to God and is given to us by God. And as the rightful owner, the Savior will hold us accountable for how we utilize what He has given us. This truth is most vividly confirmed in this week's Gospel reading. (continue)

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

This Gospel reading is especially important in our time. The culture of death is becoming more and more of a problem in contemporary society. Abortions abound and are legal. People who oppose them are called evil. Euthanasia is gaining more and more acceptance. Life after death is mocked as a silly superstition. In view of this growing darkness, a correct understanding of the nature of death and what follows is something that we as Orthodox Christian need always to remember. This Gospel reading encourages us to do just that. (continue)
