Eighteenth Sunday After Pentecost PDF Print E-mail

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

This week's short Gospel reading demonstrates in a most profound way  how radically different are the moral values found in Christ's teachings as compared to the moral norms of civil society. When we read these words of the Savior, we are faced with the need to conduct a sober self analysis. Which are the values that we follow in our personal lives? Are we with Christ, or are we with the world? (continue)

Seventeenth Sunday After Pentecost PDF Print E-mail

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

In this Gospel reading we see the Savior calling His first apostles to full time service for His Mission. We can read about this and view it simply as a very important event in the history of the Church. But if that is all that we get out of this reading, we are denying ourselves vital spiritual information that the Gospel is meant to give us. Divine Scripture is God speaking to us and teaching us what we need to know for the benefit of our spiritual lives. Therefore, it is very important to not only read the Gospel on a surface level, but to always look deeper for the lessons that our Savior is offering. (continue)

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

Before we begin our discussion, I would like to remind everyone that on Saturday of this week, we celebrate one of the twelve major feast days of the Church, the Exaltation of the Cross. By chronology, it is the last of these twelve feast days. During the vigil on Friday, the cross will be carried out to the middle of the church by the bishop and raised and lowered five times in different directions in memory of how the original cross of Christ was raised in different directions for all the people to venerate it after it was found, having been hidden by Christ's enemies for several hundred years. I urge all of you who are able to come to the cathedral to witness and participate in this solemn ceremony. (continue)

Nativity of the Theotokos PDF Print E-mail

My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

First of all I want to apologize to those of you who read my weekly discussions on the Sobor website. My discussion on last Sunday's Gospel reading never made it on to the website because I submitted it too late. Because this Sunday is one of the twelve major feast days of our Church, I think that it would be appropriate and profitable to talk about it instead of the Gospel reading(continue)

Fourteenth Sunday After Pentecost PDF Print E-mail

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

Because the spiritual level of people had fallen to a very low level, Jesus Christ taught during His earthly mission using parables. Through these images from every day life, He was helping His audience understand the lessons that He was giving them. But the parables are not directed only to the people of that time. They are also giving very important messages to all Christians throughout the ages and even apply to us today. (continue)
